"...it would seem in time there was no recess of the woods so dark, nor any place so secret, that it was exempt from those who had pledged their blood to satiate vengeance." - James Fenimore Cooper
In an effort to reunite with their father, the commander at Fort William Henry, Cora and Alice Munro, accompanied by Cora's suitor, Major Duncan Heyward, are led into an ambush by the Huron war captain, Magua, masquerading as a Mohawk guide. Magua, in addition to military motives, has sworn to avenge himself personally upon the entire Munro family for a past injury he won't easily reveal. But the ambush is broken by Hawkeye, Chingachgook and Uncas, who agree to guide the Munro sisters and Heyward to the safety of Fort Willaim Henry. En route, Cora, who has never met anyone remotely like the independent and candid Hawkeye, comes to realise she is in a new world with a new kind of man and in her heart and her thoughts this man and this place captivate her.
Upon arrival outside Fort Willaim Henry they dicover instead of sanctuary a fort under siege by a massive French and Indian army. The surrounding territory is alive with roving war parties. Pursued from behind, they steal into the fort during an artillery bombardment. Colonel Munro is indebted to these men who guided his children to safety, but gratitude turns to conflict because Hawkeye and Uncas brought with them the news that frontier homes are being raided by Huron and Ottawa war parties allied with the French, and they, too, press the colonial militia's demand to be released to protect their homes. Munro, obedient to british military self-interest, refuses.
Meanwhile, Cora rejects Heyward's proposal, and she and Hawkeye become lovers. Then Hawkeye is arrested and condemned to hang because he facilitated the colonials' escape from the fort.
While Cora, following her heart, is separated by the bars from Hawkeye in the stockade, the French launch their final mortar bombardment. Fort William Henry falls to Montcalm, the French commander, who offers generous terms of surrender and safe passage out of French occupied territory. Behind Montcalm's generosity, however, is deceit as the retreating English column, including Hawkeye in chains, is attacked by Magua and an army of warriors on August 8, 1757.
As Cora and her sister are captured by Magua, their only hope lies in Hawkeye and the Mohicans...
